The Symposium on the Overseas Dissemination of the English Version of Religious Faith of the Chinese and Contemporary Religions Studies in China

On December 10th, the Symposium on the Overseas Dissemination of the English Version of Religious Faith of the Chinese and Contemporary Religions Studies in China organized by China Social Sciences Press was successfully held in Beijing. The symposium focused on telling the story of Chinese religions and spreading the voice of Chinese religions, and conducted in-depth discussions and exchanges on how to enhance the overseas dissemination and the international influence of Chinese books.

The author/editor of the book, Zhuo Xinping, member of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and president of the Chinese Religious Society, was invited to attend the symposium and give a speech. Wei Changbao, editor-in-chief of China Social Sciences Press, attended the meeting and delivered a speech.

In his speech, Wei Changbao said that "Understanding China" is a grand narrative of China in the new era. To understand Chinese culture, we must understand Chinese religion. The two books, Religious Faith of the Chinese and Contemporary Religions Studies in China, are a window and key to help readers at home and abroad understand Chinese religious beliefs and comprehensively understand the achivements of contemporary Chinese religious studies. It will help to eliminate the international community's prejudice against Chinese religion, clear up the misunderstandings of Chinese religion policy, and has very unique significance for strengthening contemporary Chinese and foreign cultural exchanges, academic communication and spiritual understanding. How to use more effective platforms and resources to maximize the unique academic and cultural values of the two books and truly exert their world influence to allow more international scholars and readers to understand the religious beliefs of the Chinese and contemporary Chinese religion studies, sharing Chinese wisdom and Chinese experience, is what China Social Sciences Press is constantly thinking about, and it is also the target that China Social Sciences Society will further work on.

Zhuo Xinping said in his speech that the book Religious Faith of the Chinese is a review of the tradition of the Chinese people's thoughts and beliefs from ancient times to the present and fully explains the Chinese culture of self-discipline and social commitment. The book Contemporary Religions Studies in China shows contemporary China's understanding of religion and reflects the characteristics and achievements of contemporary Chinese religious studies advancing with the times. Zhuo Xinping said that the construction of a discipline system, academic system, and discourse system with Chinese characteristics requires an open attitude. The publication of the English version of these two books reflects, on the one hand, the development of contemporary Chinese academics, and on the other hand, the freedom of religious belief in China and the enlightenment and openness of academic discussions, which indicate that, just like other disciplines, religious studies in China are moving from the marginal position to the center of the world academic stage.

He Mingxing believes that editors with an international perspective should be vigorously cultivated to achieve the three "crossings" of academic publishing in China, that is, cross-languages in book publishing, cross-border book markets, and cross-international talent teams. In addition, in combination with cutting-edge research such as the evaluation of Chinese culture external communication effect in recent years, He Mingxing also proposed to adhere to the "popularization" and "professionalization" in order to leverage the international mass market and academic specialization markets.

Other experts and scholars also discussed their personal experience of the internationalization of Chinese culture from different perspectives combining their personal academic fields and work practices, and put forward valuable suggestions on how to further enhance the influence of Chinese books overseas.

The symposium was presided by Xia Xia, deputy director of the International Cooperation and Publishing Department of China Social Sciences Press.
